Donald Glover, known by his stage name Childish Gambino, has announced that he will be retiring his rap alter-ego after releasing half a dozen albums under the name.
In a candid interview with the New York Times, Glover shared his reasons for the decision, revealing a shift in his creative fulfillment.
"It really was just like, �Oh, it's done, It's not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn't need to build in this way anymore.
This revelation comes ahead of the release of his sixth album, Bando Stone & the New World, set to drop on July 19.
Bando Stone & The New World marks Glover's second album release of 2024, following Atavista, an updated version of his 2020 album 3.15.20, which was released in May.
In addition to his musical projects, Glover is gearing up for a massive world tour spanning from August 2024 to February 2025.
He will be joined by fellow genre-bending artists Willow Smith and Amaarae.
Adding to the excitement, Glover will release a film of the same name, exclusively available in IMAX theaters. Produced by RCA and Gilga, the movie features Glover as Bando Stone, a fictional famous musician navigating a post-apocalyptic world despite his only talent being singing.
The trailer promises a mix of creepy and comedic elements, with Glover's character encountering giant blood-thirsty creatures, electromagnetic traps, and other surreal threats.
On the acting front, Glover has confirmed that he won't return for the second season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith despite the show's renewal by Amazon Prime.
Glover and his co-star Maya Erskine will not lead the second season, although he will remain credited as a co-creator and executive producer. Speculations suggest that his busy musical schedule influenced this decision.
Donald Glover's transition from Childish Gambino marks the end of an era, but fans can look forward to his diverse projects in music, film, and beyond.
