Eminem's latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), has generated a spectrum of reviews from critics, marking a pivotal moment in the rapper's career.
In his 12th studio album, Eminem symbolically kills off his alter ego, Slim Shady, with the album artwork depicting Shady in a body bag and the music video for "Tobey" featuring Eminem wielding a chainsaw.
Clash described the album as ''a mixed bag'', combining elements of effective fan service with moments of disappointment. Robin Murray noted,
It doesn't quite feel like an ending, but neither does it feel like a continuation. A mixed, often muddled album, it features some of Eminem's best rapping in a decade those fast, skippy-yet-intricate flows will never fail to thrill but his pen is often blunted.
Ahead of the album's release, Eminem emphasized its conceptual nature, urging fans to listen to the songs in sequence. The 19-track album includes singles like "Tobey" and "Houdini," along with a sequel to his 1999 hit "Guilty Conscience" featuring Dr. Dre.
Billboard praised the latter track, calling it
not the original, but a worthy second coming.
Michael Saponara highlighted a significant moment in the album where
Slim Shady puts Marshall on blast for creating him as an alter-ego to stir up controversy and essentially be a shield to say jarring things that he didn't really have the courage to stand on.
The album also delves into controversial territory with tracks like "Fuel," where Eminem addresses the sexual assault allegations against Sean "Diddy" Combs. The lyrics include:
I'm like an R-A-P-E-R/I got so many S-As/S-As/Wait, he didn't just spell the word rapper and leave out a 'P', did he?
Another track, "Antichrist," aggressively critiques pronouns, woke society, and references a disturbing video of Diddy attacking his then-girlfriend Cassie in 2016.
Overall, The Death of Slim Shady has proven to be a polarizing project, stirring both acclaim and criticism, reflecting Eminem's complex legacy in the hip hop world.
