Lil Yachty has decided to step back from social media following controversy surrounding his recent comments and actions.
The rapper, known for his candid personality, found himself in hot water after discussing an unreleased Drake collaboration and making bold statements about fashion trends on various platforms.
During a recent appearance on the Flagrant podcast, Lil Yachty revealed that he had leaked a song titled «Super Soak,» featuring Drake, after failing to clear a sample.
''I sent a song to Kai [Cenat] to leak. We couldn't get the sample cleared so I just let Kai play it. [So that's not coming out] but it's everywhere. [The influencer we sampled] went down like a Christian path [so he wouldn't clear it]'', Yachty explained.
The leak of the track, which featured a significant influencer's sample, sparked discussions among fans and critics alike.
Adding to the drama, Lil Yachty stirred the pot on his own podcast by asserting that Atlanta is the true trendsetter in fashion, accusing New York of copying the Southern city's style.
''I feel like New York didn't have this I don't want to say identity but everyone used to just kinda copy Atlanta. You said it yourself. Even, like, the influence was extremely heavy from Atlanta''
.
He went further, particularly targeting residents of the Bronx and Queens, questioning whether they even engage with the fashion scene in Manhattan.
The remarks drew swift backlash, especially from New York natives. Notable figures like Juelz Santana and Fivio Foreign expressed their displeasure, with Santana responding on Instagram:
''WE all Love Atl But did @lilyachty SAY say the flyes [ninja emoji] N the Most TRENDSETTERS Came from ALT WOW Much love bro''
.
Santana emphasized the influential role of New York artists like A$AP Rocky and Fabolous in shaping hip-hop fashion, highlighting the contributions of his own Dipset crew alongside Jim Jones.
In response to the criticism, Lil Yachty took to Instagram Live on August 1 to announce his decision to leave social media for the foreseeable future.
''I'm getting the fuck off the internet. I'm not doing no more talking'', he declared, expressing frustration with the backlash. ''I don't got shit else to say. I'm gone off this Internet shit. I think I'm gone for the rest of the year. I swear to God. I ain't talking. I ain't got shit else to say. I'm contracted to do this podcast shit, unfortunately''. He concluded emphatically, ''But I ain't posting no more shit. I'm not posting no fits. I'm deleting the apps off my phone, I swear to God. I'm not tweeting. I'm minding my fucking business, man''
.
As Lil Yachty takes a break from the digital world, the hip-hop community continues to debate his controversial statements and the implications for his career.
Whether this hiatus will lead to a reset or further fuel the fire remains to be seen, but it's clear that Lil Yachty's presenceor lack thereof will be felt in the industry.
