In a groundbreaking event, NASA transmitted the lyrics of Missy Elliott's hit song "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" to Venus, marking a historic first for both hip-hop and space exploration.
The transmission took place at 10:05 a.m. PDT on Friday, July 12, from NASA's DSN (Deep Space Network) Goldstone complex.
Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division at NASA Headquarters, said,
Both space exploration and Missy Elliott's art have been about pushing boundaries.
She highlighted Missy Elliott's history of space-centric storytelling and futuristic visuals in her music videos, making this collaboration truly fitting.
The transmission traveled 158 million miles (254 million kilometers) at the speed of light, taking nearly 14 minutes to reach Venus. The DSN's Deep Space Station 13 (DSS-13) radio dish antenna, nicknamed Venus, facilitated the transmission.
Missy Elliott, reflecting on this milestone, expressed her excitement:
I still can't believe I'm going out of this world with NASA through the Deep Space Network when 'The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)' becomes the first ever hip-hop song to transmit to space!
She chose Venus for its symbolism of strength, beauty, and empowerment, feeling humbled to share her art with the universe.
NASA's DSN, which has been in continuous operation since 1963, plays a crucial role in tracking, sending commands, and receiving scientific data from spacecraft.
The network comprises three complexes in Goldstone, California; Madrid, Spain; and Canberra, Australia, managed by JPL for NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program.
In addition to this musical milestone, NASA has two missions planned to explore Venus. DAVINCI (Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging) and VERITAS (Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy) are set to launch no earlier than 2029 and 2031, respectively.
Both missions will send data back to Earth using the DSN.
