Eminem, one of the most iconic figures in music, has deeply regretted his 2002 song "Cleanin' Out My Closet," which harshly targets his mother, Debbie Nelson, and has apologized for writing it, stating he never performs it.
The track takes aim at his mother, Debbie Nelson, with harsh lyrics calling her a "selfish b***h" and saying he hopes she "burns in hell."
Eminem also mentions his daughter, Hailie, and promises that his mother will never see her again.
Some of the song's most pointed lyrics include:
"My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn't, 'til I grew up, now I blew up it makes you sick to your stomach, doesn't it?"
12 years later, in 2014, he apologized by stating:
''My mom probably got it the worst. The brunt of it, but as stubborn as we are, did I take it too far? Cleaning Out My Closet' and all them other songs. But regardless, I don't hate you cause ma. You're still beautiful to me, 'cause you're my mom. But I'm sorry mama for Cleanin' Out My Closet,' at the time I was angry. Rightfully maybe so, never meant that far to take it though, cause. Now I know it's not your fault and I'm not making jokes. That song I no longer play at shows and I cringe every time it's on the radio.''
Eminem has just dropped his twelfth studio album, The Death of Slim Shady.
The album comprises 19 tracks, featuring previously released singles "Tobey" and "Houdini." It also includes a sequel to his 1999 hit "Guilty Conscience" with Dr. Dre.
Billboard praised this new track, noting that while it's not the original, it stands as a commendable follow-up.
Despite the positive reception, the album has stirred some controversy.
Fans have raised concerns over Eminem's lyrics referencing the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust.
