Olympic boxer Imane Khelif has called for an end to the negativity directed at athletes, highlighting the "massive effects" such hatred can have on individuals.
The 25-year-old Algerian athlete addressed the issue during an interview with SNTV, following international controversy regarding her gender.
Khelif, who has been competing for years, expressed confusion over the timing of these questions but remains focused on winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games.
She passionately urged the public to respect the Olympic principles and refrain from bullying athletes, stating,
''I send a message to all the people of the world to uphold the Olympic principles and the Olympic Charter, to refrain from bullying all athletes, because this has effects, massive effects.'' She emphasized that such actions can ''destroy people, it can kill people's thoughts, spirit and mind. It can divide people. And because of that, I ask them to refrain from bullying.''
Despite the controversy, Khelif hopes her family has not been too affected and plans to let her performance speak for itself, aiming for first place.
She also expressed gratitude to the International Olympic Committee for their support amid the situation.
This backing comes after the International Boxing Association raised concerns over her eligibility, citing failed tests at last year's world championships without specifying the reasons.
When asked about any testing beyond doping, Khelif chose not to comment.
As she prepares for her next match against Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng, Khelif is guaranteed at least a bronze medal, continuing her journey with determination and resilience.
